Oceanic Blue - SS22

Hello all! It’s been a while since my last post. Over the first half of the year, I’ve been focusing on designing, refining my sewing skills, and working with new fabrics. I’ve also felt uninspired at times and struggled with coming up with a coherent theme to my new collection. But I’m so happy to bring you my new small collection that is finally here.

My latest collection is called Oceanic Blue. I’ve always had a fondness with the ocean and being around water. The mysteriousness and otherworldliness of the ocean has always intrigued me. On the surface, the water looks so calm and empty— yet, there is so many living organisms underneath the blue water that we cannot see.

Around 80% of the ocean is unexplored. That means that what we know of the ocean is only a small percentage of the actual ocean itself.

Besides the beauty of the ocean, I chose to dedicate my collection on the theme of the ocean due to the increasingly alarming news about the decline of marine biodiversity. It is something that has been on my mind and breaks my heart whenever I read about it on the news.

With climate change making temperatures of the ocean rise, the ecosystem of the ocean is gradually being destroyed. Coral reefs in particular may be extinct once carbon dioxide hits the levels predicted for between 2030 and 2060.

I hope that creating this collection will raise awareness on this issue and inspire others to help preserve the beauty of the ocean.

I was lucky enough to find a limited amount of deadstock pleated fabrics from Tokyo. The design of the top and the fabric itself is quite simple but it wasn’t easy to find. Over the years I’ve tried sourcing pleated fabric locally and in Korea, but many times the fabric was very cheap looking or unflattering on the body. You couldn’t imagine the joy I felt when I finally found the right fabric.

Going forward, I am going to try experimenting with hand pleated tops. In fact, I’ve actually started to hand pleat a silk fabric that I bought— stay tuned to see the process and final result soon!

My thoughts in this blog post are all over the place but I just wrote down everything that’s been on my mind while creating this collection. Hope you enjoyed reading if you read up to this point :-).

Until next time,

Javia
